You have probably seen people that you know and respect generate loads of cash with nothing but e-mail. Many of these big list builders write about how much money they made in a single promotion and in some cases it’s a high 5 figures!

I’m sure that you’ll agree that anyone would love to make that much money that easily! On the same note, you will find many people saying e-mail doesn’t work and people that have lost money trying to build a list.

These people are either so negative they’ll never succeed or just don’t have the skill to make it happen. Things will be changing but they will actually be making things better for honest e-mail publishers.

It is harder to get your messages delivered but if you generate a list honestly and effectively you will profit.

“E-mail Is Dead!”

I am going to cover a common misconception about list building. Many “so called” gurus are claiming that e-mail is dead and that you need to find another way to contact your customers.

I am here to say this is complete BS.

E-mail is still profitable and will continue to be profitable for as long as the Internet exists. If e-mail were to go “dead’ as these guru’s have said, it wouldn’t be something you or I would see in our lifetimes.

So if you’ve heard that and worried, don’t. E-mail is here to stay and people saying that are actually good news for you.

Why?

Because they believe that and will be pulling out all of their list building efforts anytime. That means you can pick up where they left off and grab the subscribers that they left behind!

Why E-Mail Is So Powerful

While there are many people who understand the power of e-mail and profit from it every day, there are many who don’t.

I routinely get questions like this…

“Why is e-mail so profitable? Can’t I just send people to my site from ads?”

“Isn’t e-mail just a big hassle that will get me spam complaints and headaches?”

I thought it essential that I answer these questions right now so you don’t have them floating around in your head.
The reason that e-mail is so profitable is because you can contact your subscribers “multiple” times.

That means if they don’t buy, you can follow-up and offer your services to them again! Testing has proven it takes 7-12 times of seeing your offer for most people to buy.

E-mail absolutely isn’t a hassle because it gives you the power to get people to your site with just the click of a button and if you build your list right, you won’t get spam complaints!

Make People Want To Hear From You

A question I’m asked on a regular basis is “do people really want to get e-mail from me?”

The answer is…

If you generate your subscribers properly, they will happy to receive your messages. Many people generate subscribers using deceptive tactics like “get this free newsletter” and all they do is send ads, no newsletter.

Here’s a secret that you’ve probably never heard before…

“If you are going to send them ads, tell them you are going to send them ads or “recommendations”. This means that if they signup they WANT to receive product reviews or recommendations and will be much more responsive.

If you trick someone by offering ads disguised as a newsletter, they are going to get mad, report you as spam and ignore your e-mail.

So list building has to be maintained with proper care & try to avoid tricking people in building your list. Do it honestly, you will definitely benefit from your list.

ALL ABOUT LIST BUILDING

Contacts – the single biggest asset which can prove wonders if utilized effectively. An email list is definitely every web master’s asset. Nothing like having a ready list of contacts who are your potential customers; the ones that will bring in money into your business by purchasing your product or service. Big sales, more traffic, link popularity etc. are some of the benefits that email lists will do to you.

Growing your email list is what is called list building. It requires constant effort over a period of time to build this list of a good number and quality potential people.

Before anything, what is the purpose of you building an email list? What do you seek to gain? Are you building a list to gain more traffic, market your product, share ideas? Your goal plays a role in determining your strategy for list building so that you can align the two.

Now that you have your objectives clear, we can move onto the next step – that is, formulating strategies. But keep one thing in mind, whatever you decide to do for your list building quest, NEVER spam. It is highly unethical and unprofessional.

Here’s another thing you must remember – you cannot just go about inviting people to be a part of your list unless you have something very significant to offer. You must make members’ enrolment worthwhile. Share your subject matter expertise with your list members; be available to your members to revert to you with questions. Establish something noteworthy that you can offer to your members.

Grab every opportunity to interact with people, especially those that are in your field. This will give you a chance to invite these people to your list. So this way, you won’t have merely a bunch of contacts but you will have people who are genuinely interested in what you do or your product. They should be people who are your potential customers or site visitors. Else, there is no point having uninterested, irrelevant contacts in your list. Quality is just as important as quantity.

If you already have a website, then you can have a separate section encouraging visitors to be a part of your website. Make this invitation as attractive as possible and members should know what to expect after signing up.

Remember, just gathering contacts, is not the end of the process. Retaining email is very important. You have to offer something to them continually. You have to remind them that you exist. Provide fresh content and make room for an interest instillation in the minds of your members, always. Refresh this by giving them offers from time to time, sending valuable information, which will interest your members etc.

List building is a wonderful tool to increase traffic, get extremely good sales and high growth provided you use them judiciously. Make the opportunity or break it, the choice lies in your hands!

I know I wrote this topic before.. But again I wish to remind all of you to why mailing list is important in any business.. be it offline or online..

So here is the question again..

Why Have a Mailing List?

Before anything else, it is important for you to have good reasons to have your own mailing list in the first place. Consider the following:

If you join a Network Marketing company, your upline would require you to write a list of 100 names of people whom you know. The people you know are your prospects because they might be interested in becoming a consumer or starting their own Network Marketing business like you.

If you own a Conventional B2B Business, your target prospects are other businesses, and their information and contact details are likely to be found in the Yellow Pages or telephone directories. Thus the information found in Yellow Pages and the telephone directories are your list of prospects.

So, why have your own mailing list? Because that is where your potential customers are!

The common mantra that most other Internet Marketers follow is “The money is in the list” and I tend to agree with them.

Of course, that is often true only if you harness your mailing list well and that your subscribers are responsive in the sense that they do bother reading your mails every time you send a broadcast to your mailing list. How responsive your mailing list subscribers are depends on how well you develop your relationship with them and how much you understand who your prospects are. Otherwise, don’t hope on cashing in onto your mailing list!

Regardless of what kind of Internet Business you are starting, having your own mailing list is a must. No exceptions.

I am aware that there are JV brokers who are making money simply by making successful Joint Venture deals between the product creators and E-zine publishers without having to have their own mailing list. But then, having your own mailing list gives you tremendous advantages that both JV brokers and product creators do not have.

For one, whenever you have a product or service you either own or are an affiliate for, you would not have to look further than your own mailing list thus you can be in profit within hours from the time you send out your endorsement letters.

The bigger and more responsive your list is, the more sales you will make and in a shorter period of time.

Secondly, having your own mailing list is more important than just having your own product. Even if you do not own your own product, you can still be an affiliate or Joint Venture for other people’s products.

For the third and most important reason: having your own mailing list gives you the opportunity to first prove your credibility to your subscribers through what you have to share with them in your E-zine!

As promised on my previous post, I will reveal my total subscribers since May 2007. It is not that big, quite small actually. All subscribers collected are from 3 email marketing campaigns.

Many many successful marketers insist that money is in the list. What do they mean by that? So right now now, I am in the process of building my own list. I have a couple of hundreds of subscribers through a couple of my email marketing campaigns using GetResponse service.
